Trolympics

I'm going back in time a little bit, so bear with me. I have to update you on the Trolympics. Many of you know what that is, but some of you are in the dark. Prepare to be enlightened!!! The Trolympics were invented in 2007 by Troy L. Manning as a way to celebrate his birthday. The Trolympics were a test of endurance, strength, and mental stamina. Participants of the Trolympics began the day with a Procession followed by the inaugural speech given by Troy L. Manning. The first two pictures were taken during the Processional. Each participant and Hogan had a flag decorated by Hogan to wave proudly during the Processional. We marched around the house to the meeting spot (living room) where we all listened intently to Troy's moving speech (is everyone picturing us marching around a 2-bedroom apartment like idiots? If not, do so now!). After the speech, we started the games. There were 5 games total: washers, badminton, free throw competition, ping pong, and War (also known as Battle). It was a tough competition and everyone played their hardest, but only 3 could be awarded medals! The final picture shows our 3 winners. Troy was in 1st, Hair in 2nd, and Papa G in 3rd. Although no women placed in the Trolympics (we are protesting this and asking for changes in next year's games), I am proud to announce that Tami represented well, coming in first out of the women. The Trolympics ended with a Recessional (again- imagine all of us marching through the apartment) and the awarding of the medals. Three Cheers to the Trolympics!!!!!!

Itsy Bitsy Spider

This summer our porch has become the home of a giant spider. We are all fascinated by it. Hogan calls it the Itsy Bitsy Spider and Troy has named it Ralph. I finally tried to identify the spider and found out that it is the Black and Yellow Argiope and Ralph is a female. The other day we watched it trap and eat a grasshopper. Tonight we were intrigued by the brave male spider courting this frightning female. The male is probably a quarter of the size of the female. I felt so nervous watching this little guy make his way towards the center of the web, like at any moment she might wind him up in her silky threads. We all sat by the window watching the male slowly creeping closer. It was better than TV!

Splash Friday

Last Friday Hogan's class had a Splash Afternoon that involved a spinning sprinkler. I brought Hogan over so that he could be part of it, and I played the part of the 'extra' adult needed to monitor all the wet children. Our Splash afternoon began with snack. If you'll notice in the first picture, everyone EXCEPT Hogan appears civilized. Hogan is the only one who has found it necessary to spread his snack upon the table. He was also the only one that was very unimpressed with his mother being there.

Next, we headed outside. Getting five toddlers slathered in sunscreen and out the door is quite a feat. I was tired by the time we got to the backyard. But then the fun started. All the children EXCEPT Hogan tentatively observed the water trying to decide if getting wet was okay or not. Hogan spent the first five minutes outside screaming wildly as he ran full steam ahead through the sprinkler. He really was like a maniac, as if he'd never seen water before.

Finally, everyone made it into the water and for awhile all five were huddled around the sprinkler having what looked like a meeting of the minds to decide how exactly the sprinkler worked. It was very entertaining to watch all of them work together to push the water, splash the water, and manually hold the rotating sprinkler head so it stopped turning. Quite a collaborative effort.

When it was time to leave Hogan was one pooped kid. He was in bed sleeping soundly by 6:15 pm. What a life!

Royalty

Hogan and I made this sticker crown for him to wear last week. I knew he would like the sticker part of making the crown, but I thought he'd be uninterested in the wearing the crown part. I was completely wrong. What I hadn't factored in was the Spot the Dog video we had watched earlier in the week. In this particular episode Spot wears a yellow crown to his birthday party. As aresult, Hogan loved wearing his crown- in fact, he called it his birthday crown. Whenever he put it on we had to sing 'Happy Birthday to Hogan'. Sadly, the crown didn't make it past the week. It's been worn many times and, alas, is only made of paper. BUT don't worry. Those of you participating in the Trolympics this coming weekend (Papa, Nana, Tami) you will all be getting your very own crown decorated by Hogan to wear at the opening ceremony. And, of course, you'll have to wear it! :)
